Best Cake Pops Recipe

I’ve had my eye on this new trend of “cake pops” but I never dove in head first because I didn’t want to commit to all the equipment you need to make them. And then my sister brought home an experiment for us to try- cake pops with OUT the cake pop pan/appliance.
What you need:
Cake mix (I used white)
Chocolate frosting
Chocolate candy melts
Candy sticks
This is seriously the easiest recipe to follow, and they are SO moist and yummy.
First, bake your cake according to the directions on the box. Once it has cooled (COMPLETELY COOLED), throw it into a large bowl and break it up into pieces/crumbs (seems like such a waste huh?… it’s not!)

(ps- that wedding ring came off right after this step because it gets messy from here on out!)
Next, you’re going to add frosting. Just dig right in and mix it right up with the cake crumbs. You don’t use the whole tub of frosting, but at least half of it, depending on what size tub you buy. It is about 10 ounces you’ll need.

It’s going to look something like this when you’re done:

Next, form little balls – we did ours about the size of a golf ball, if not slightly smaller…..

It helped having two people working on this, because while the balls were being formed the other was melting the chocolate candy melts for dipping. That step takes a while to make sure you don’t do it too fast to where it burns the chocolate.
This next step is really important- you have to dip the candy stick in the melted chocolate!

THEN Stick your formed ball onto the end of a candy stick:

Line them up on a pan and stick them in the fridge until hardened (about 2 or 3 hours) This step is like the secret step (besides the dipping of stick into chocolate) because it dries the balls out a bit.

Once hardened, dip them in your melted chocolate (you may have to melt more) and stick them back in the fridge until your outer chocolate is hardened.
You can decorate these any way you want- these were for my dad’s birthday, for him to take to work with him and pass out (I know, how the tables have turned! ;)) and so we did green chocolate splashes on ours-

And by chocolate splashes I mean we took green chocolate candy melts (melted), dipped a fork in it and literally splattered them until we felt they were pretty. Very messy, but a very fast way of decorating them.

And now I have to end this post and go to the store, this pregnant belly is now craving THE BEST CAKE POPS RECIPE ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if only you knew how serious I was right now….

    That is the best idea ever!! My girls always ask me if we can buy the pan to make them while, but I never want to spend the money on them. Now we can make them and they will be thrilled! Pinning it right now. 🙂

    I’ve always thought those little machines made it look like it would be easy to make these, but then they wouldn’t be. This looks messy, but not very hard. A fun thing to do with friends.

    Hey there! So I do these similarly, but you can basically do them with any flavours you want…I often use pie filling or jam instead of the icing. Chocolate and lemon, or lemon and rasberry. Just if you wanna try anything fancy…carrot cake and cheesecake icing, spice cake and pumpkin pie filling…the options are ENDLESS! 🙂

      I’ve never tried freezing them, but I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work! 🙂
