Bright Bird Nursery

21 May

It is a tradition for my mom to make a quilt for her grandbabies. Since Jonathan is so into birding, we fell in love with the fabric we found when we went shopping for the quilt. It is bright, bold and playful. We backed it with a black and gray cotton to help settle it and make it more masculine  My mom made matching burp cloths with little patches of the fabric on it. We fell in love with this quilt so much we decided the whole baby’s room needed to match as best as possible. I’m so thrilled with my bright bird nursery I wanted to show you what we’ve done so far (it is not done yet).

After the quilt and burp cloths were done, I was trying to figure out organization for all the clothes we’ve received. We only have 1 dresser that currently is being used by the girls- but I had some cubbies from the craft room that although were being used, didn’t exactly match anyway. I decided it would be worth the sacrifice and brought them upstairs to the nursery. Jonathan found the perfect color blue in canvas boxes at Target to go inside the cubbies. Now I can organize them by size in each box.

And so far, the only wall decor we’ve done is a birds on wire vinyl decal that I whipped up. I was fortunate enough to have the exact colors I needed on hand- I’m still not sure how I lucked out on that. Ordering vinyl and waiting for it to arrive would not please this pregnant crafting woman, haha! We have a chair railing around the room that I decided to incorporate with the decal. The chair rail became the wire.

I used the telephone poles from Elizabeth Mayne’s “Birds On A Wire Frame”  design ID 37490 in the Silhouette Store. I used the knife tool to separate the pieces I didn’t want for my design, and erased the excess. I had to edit the points to fix the rounded dome things at the top, and to fix the cut off wires. It sounds complicated but it really was simple. If you are really that curious, leave a comment with your question, I can make a tutorial video for you. The birds I used are two separate designs I purchased. The smaller bird is “Bird” by Donna Downey and is filed under design ID 7775 in the silhouette store. The larger bird is also called “Bird” and is also by Donna Downey, filed under deisgn ID 7773 in the silhouette store.

The nursery sure is coming along. Just in the knick of time too because I’m supposedly having this baby in 3 days! I did all of this in about a week’s time. Nothing like the nesting phase kicking in late, eh? We’ll see just how much more we get done. Do you like the colors of this bright bird nursery? Any ideas for matching decor?

THANKS! I feel like I need something more to tie it all together. I was thinking on the wall behind the crib doing a tree branch with a bird cage hanging and a bird…. too much?

This is a really cute idea. I’ve seen several people place tree trunk decals on a wall (skinny trunks) and it looks cute. I saw in a picture once, somebody actually hung birdhouses in the nursery…to give it a 3D look. But everything looks really nice!

LOVE the quilt. Sometimes simple stripes to highlight a really fun fabric (like those birds) is the best.

The quilt is so beautiful and I love how you subtly carried the theme to the wall. Thank you for sharing at Fluster’s Creative Muster.
