Chalkboard Friday Countdown Mug

22 Dec

At work every year we do “Secret Birthday Pal”, where we fill out a “my likes” sheet and throw it in a bucket then draw someone else’s name. The week of that person’s birthday you secretly leave them little things of “their likes” and on their birthday reveal yourself with the big and final horray gift (not to exceed $5).
This year, I pulled a name of a teacher I’d never met before. I was super hesitant until I saw we had similar likes, then I got excited. Everyday I dropped little things off for her, scrapbook embelishments, vinyl for her cricut, etc. She had listed that she liked Mochas, and so for her big reveal birthday gift I decided to get creative (knowing she’d appreciate the creativity) and I made her a Friday Countdown mug with my Chalkboard Spray paint!

Supplies You’ll Need:
Krylon Chalkboard Spray Paint
A Mug

1. I started with a mug from Dollar Deals. By the end of this tutorial, you will notice the finished product is not the same mug as the one pictured below. Let’s just say I had a craftastrophy that I will blast my mistake out on during the appropriate step.

I used the Postcard Portfolio for the circle image. Then I had to draw lines going out around it so that when I applied the vinyl to the round mug, it would lay flat. The image on the right is the font I used for the vinyl applique that I’d leave on the mug as the countdown wording.Chalkboard Friday Countdown MugHere is my vinyl stencil. You can’t see the lines that were cut around the circle, but trust me they are there and you’ll want them if you do this so that it lays flat on the mug (no bubbles)Chalkboard Friday Countdown Mug3. Apply the stencil….. and cover up the rest of the mug so that the spray paint doesn’t spot it. You’ll want to stuff the inside of the mug with newspaper or something to really be sure the wind doesn’t blow the spray paint in it…. sound like I know from experience? Yes, yes I do. I had to start all over. Hence, the different mug as the final product than what is first pictured.Chalkboard Friday Countdown Mug4. Spray that sucker down. The Spray Can directions say at least 2 coats in order to get the chalkboard effect…. I think i did 3 coats just to be sure.Chalkboard Friday Countdown Mug5. Apply your vinyl (I used cast vinyl, not craft vinyl. It has a 5 year life and is more water resistant. Still, this would be a hand wash only mug)Chalkboard Friday Countdown MugAnd voila!Chalkboard Friday Countdown Mug
