Courage, New Hampshire

Are you a period drama lover? My family is huge on it. Recently, I was contacted to host a  review of a new and upcoming period television drama by Colony Bay. Courage, New Hampshire is a family friendly period drama that sucks you right in. Within 15 minutes of the opening episode, I was eager for more and on the edge of my seat with excitement, intrigued to see where this was going. With the period drama genre growing in popularity, this TV series was featured on PBS making ratings history in Southern California and nearly doubling its audience for episode 2.  It not only is entertaining but historically accurate as it was written based on historical documents and personal letters. Written and directed by James Patrick Riley, this pre-revolutionary war era drama is set in a rural town in New Hampshire in the 18th century. With the impressive cast of both British and American talent including Jim Tavaré (Harry Potter), Joe Massingill (Trouble with the Curve) and Basil Hoffman (The Artist), the story line and acting fully captures the audience.

The attention grabber for me? Episode 1 begins with an opening development of the relationship of “Sarah Pine” who has a daughter out of wedlock fathered by a redcoat Sergeant, Bob Wheedle. Alexandra Oliver, “Sarah Pine” is very pretty, and at first I felt Nathan Kershaw, “Bob Wheedle”, was handsome himself- and then there was a scene with him chopping wood with his formal wig off (too keep accurate with the period, wigs were of formal use) and his short hair made him so handsome! That’s about when I was hooked on what relationship they might be leading into between those two. At the end of the first episode, there is a court hearing between the town Constable and the governor’s military men of whether to hold him responsible for the fathering of the child. The hearing is romantically intense as time appropriate politics banter against the family-life of the era. The episode ends with a resolution and for those of you who aren’t into the over cheesy predictable romance, there is some comic relief with the aunt fainting in the background over some news unfolding in front of her. It made me giggle.

Without giving away too much, a synopsis of the series goes like this: Tavern keeper and justice of the peace Silas Rhodes (James Riley), alongside British deserter Bob Wheedle (Nathan Kershaw) lead a band of rebel underground soldiers known as “The Sons of Liberty,” in acts of mid-night justice against royal officials attempting to enforce unpopular law, in the pre-revolutionary New England township, Courage, New Hampshire.  Tales depicting daily life in this 18th century early American township mixed with the turmoil of pre-revolutionary war in accurate detail, provide a storyline filled with intrigue, politics, family-life and romance in this colonial period drama series.
