Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Theme Party

5 Jun

My three year old had only 1 request for her birthday- she wanted a Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood theme party. For those of you with paid cable, you may not know what this is. We have only antenna (sometimes not even that!) and so PBS is the only network my 3 year old knows at home (at Grandma’s she can watch more). Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is a PBS show for kids that is a spin off cartoon version of Mr. Roger’s. It has the characters adults would remember as puppets on Mr. Roger’s show, in cartoon. When she told me this was her request, I set out to find decoration ideas. I searched party stores and online for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood party supplies and couldn’t find anything anywhere! It would seem as though Disney has monopolized kids party supplies! I found some shops on etsy that offered printables for party supplies, but I felt uncomfortable buying them knowing these were licensed characters I was purchasing from a private seller.
The day before my daughter’s birthday, I found a website via Pinterest that offered free downloads for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood that she had created herself. Maybe you’ve heard of her site, but I’m a new fan. The website is Peonies and Poppyseeds and they have HUNDREDS of free downloads for party favors and decorations. She saved my butt for Jo’s birthday party and I’ve got the pictures to show it (thank you Kimber for your iPhone photos!)

I decided for the rest of the decor (balloons, streamers, etc) to go with the tiger stripes and red like the trolley on the show. We kept it a small party- just my parents and sisters- so printing the download from Peonies and Poppyseeds was super cheap at my local UPS store.

I had our local Wal-Mart bakery do the cupcakes since my planning was so last minute (something about just having a baby…). They didn’t have anything Daniel Tiger they could do, so I just asked for orange cupcake frosting. I had one be striped black like a tiger for Jolene.
The download also came with fry boxes. I wasn’t quite sure what I’d use these for. I settled with party favors for our guests.

I wanted to do something special decoration wise, because Jolene was way into this year’s birthday party. 3 is a fun age to celebrate because she has opinions and taste. We did a faux backdrop to our party table. Let me tell you, the pictures on Pinterest of this idea look so much better than what I did. Probably because I didn’t do it against a wall. Also, this method was not easy. I thought to myself “How could this be hard? You tape at the top, twist as you bring it down, and tape at the bottom”… the twists did NOT want to cooperate. They kept folding instead of twisting. It was a little bit disappointing and frustrated. And then you have my balloon problem I faced. On Pinterest, the balloons look so fun and full as the topper and footer to the faux backdrop. I think I blew my balloons up too full because it just looks redonkulous (that’s a hick version of ridiculous).

But that’s okay because for a 3 year old birthday party where the guests are just family, you can have Pin Fails like this 🙂 We did a basic BBQ dinner but to keep with the color scheme I had orange, coke and fruit punch soda. I also did Tiger Jello- I made orange jello, once it set I sliced it into cubes. Then I made a dark blue jello, and while I cooked it I added more blue food coloring making it appear black. Once it set in the fridge, I cut it in long slices and added it with the orange cubes. It turned out pretty cool, but no picture was taken 🙁
The small party was a hit with Jo, and I’ve learned my lesson to start planning ahead of time so I know if the desired theme is achievable or not!

I think it looked so adorable! We don’t get regular tv, so we have to settle for Netflix…but now you got me interested in the show.

Jo loves it. It’s on at 11 our time. She likes Sid The Science kid that comes on right after it too.

We write and create every show with love and care (and from a child development point of view) to give kids good characters to model and real strategies to help them with life’s big experiences. Everyone at Out of the Blue and The Fred Rogers Company will be so happy to read your post!

I’m ecstatic you found my blog! Thank you for your comment! I had no idea Super Why, Blues Clues and Daniel Tiger were all created by the same person- you! My daughter is obsessed with Super Why too! (Although over her head a bit, she loves watching/learning letters). I’ll have to look up some Blues Clues, now I’m curious how much she’d like it too. Thank you for creating fun and loving shows centered around learning- and not just “school” learning. My daughter has learned a lot about patience and controlling her temper from Daniel Tiger!!!!!!!

      Ugga Mugga for sure!!!

My daughter Sydney will be 2 at the end of October and this has helped me tremendously! Even though we have cable Daniel Tiger is the ONLY show she will ever watch. From the time she gets up til bedtime all she wants is “dan, dan”. I have found a very talented lady to make us a trolley cake but was lost on other ideas until now. Thanks again for the post.

So glad I could help! I felt lost too, those printables saved me! Good luck with your party! If you post pictures I’d love to see!

My daughter will be 2 August 5, and she LOVES Daniel and friends :). It is so age appropriate and gives me lots of opportunities to remind her how Daniel handed a problem (“You’ve gotta try new foods ’cause the might taste good!”), lol. I was disappointed that there wasn’t anything out there for party favors since DT and Super Why are the only shows we watch. Thanks for the printables. I am sure that I can combine solid color plates and table clothes to get the effect. We are not into over the top parties so this will be purrrfect ;).

HAHA we do that too! “See what it is, you might feel better!” … or mostly we sing “take a deep breath! and count to four- 1,2,3,4….” it works for us haha 🙂

    Good afternoon Mandy,
You’re a life saver! My twins love the show “Daniel Tiger”. I had no idea on what to go with regarding their one year old birthday party decor. So I searched online and came across your site. I’m so relieved and excited. I have one month to plan, hopefully all will go well. Again thank you!!! God bless!

Can you tell me what paper you used to print out the Daniel Tiger boxes?

    • Mandy November 2, 2013 at 8:37 am #

I had my local printer use premium paper, which is like a light weight cardstock

I am so glad to find this! My 5 yo was the first to love Daniel Tiger and now my 2 year old wakes up every morning asking to watch it. I was hoping to find creative help like this for her 3 yo party. She will be thrilled!

Hi- found this post while searching online for DT party decorations. Thanks for the suggestions! I too felt weird purchasing from Etsy, so was looking for other options. My 2yo daughter is Daniel obsessed and her birthday is just 2 weeks away. Thanks for the suggestions!

    • Mandy March 9, 2014 at 1:44 pm #

I felt the same way… I’m sure DT is copyrighted in some way. While I appreciate there are people with talent at designing printables based on children favorites, I didn’t want to participate in funding something that wasn’t original.

I’m glad I could help! We had a fun party, AND since this party I have discovered that our local Party City now does carry SOME daniel tiger things. Not much, but some. So hopefully this theme will be more accessible soon.

I’m so glad I found this blog. My son will be 2 and I have been searching endlessly for Daniel Tiger stuff. You are right, there is STILL nothing available other than the handmade items on etsy which you have to print out yourself anyways. I will check out the website your recommended for free downloads and I love your idea of tiger stripes twists. I couldn’t help but laugh at all of the above comments singing all the Daniel Tiger songs…”If you have to go potty stop and go right away” HAHA It’s like you guys are all living in my house. Thanks again!

I wasn’t aware you could download decorations and themes for free. The fry boxes really worked well for treat bags, and the cupcake wraps looked wonderful. Great photos!

So do I just go to local ups store and give them link on my phone to print on premium paper?

    • Mandy December 30, 2015 at 5:26 pm #

Call your local UPS store and ask them about the printing service. They may each do it differently, I’m not sure, but at my UPS store they gave me an email address to send pdf attachments to and they printed it from their email.

My son is 6 months old and he is so in love with this show if he is awake it has to be on. He will be crying and as soon as he hears the music he stops and look right at the tv… I as a mother am very cautious about what my children watch even at his young age but this show is very educational my oldest 3 which are 7,6,4 also love this show… I know every song there is in this show lol… Just wish there was more Daniel tiger stuff really want a Daniel tiger stuffed animal but have looked everywhere in stores and online… We had to take a tiger and buy a baby doll red hoody and put on it he is happy but will soon know the difference…

    • Mandy May 15, 2015 at 10:29 am #

I too wish there were more merchandise for Daniel Tiger- what a clever idea putting a red hoody on a tiger! The creator of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has actually seen this post as well, and even left a comment- I wonder if we can influence her to get more merchandise in stores 😉
