DIY Giant Teacher's Pencil

This was a fun project to do as a teacher’s gift. I had seen a few fellow crafters doing something similar on a crafters forum I’m in, only they were purchasing their pencils and doing the entire thing with vinyl (vinyl pink, silver, yellow and black). I wanted to try it from scratch and with paint (yes, even the name is painted!!!!)
Lucky for me, we had a bunch of 2×4 wood laying around. My handy dandy husband cut them to about 24 inches in length for me. He then cut one side at an angle, creating the tip of the pencil.
I sanded those suckers down so smooth, my hand was tingly for hours!
I painted each part in sections and with spray paint. I covered the wood with newspaper, exposing only each part I was to paint.
DIY Giant Teacher's PencilI used hammered metal spray paint for the silver section. I really like the realistic look it gave it! The pink is called “Fuschia” although it’s more bubble gum to me. The yellow is “Sunny Days” and the black is just ‘matte black”.

The lettering was way easier than I thought. Usually stenciling with vinyl can get tricky. You can get bleeds or it slides when spray painted. This one was a breeze, flawless. I cut their names with Lavanderia font, weeded out the negative, and spray painted it the matte black. The entire thing was then finished with triple thick coating.

I’m loving this idea for Christmas Teacher gifts. I hadn’t thought about spray paint but this looks great! I just can’t figure out how you did the letters. Was it stenciling or was it freehand? What is pulling out the negative? Any help is appreciated
    Thanks!

For the lettering, I used my silhouette machine to cut the names in vinyl, then weeded out the letters so that i could use the vinyl as stencil
