DIY Powder Laundry Detergent Recipe

27 Feb

My previous post of Liquid Laundry Detergent Recipe was such a huge hit, I had people actually requesting the powder version. How much do you love me? … Cause I’ve got a powder recipe for you. Mind you, the liquid version comes out to be .028 cents a load which is the best value, this powder version still beats store bought value at .04 cents a load!
Things you’ll need:
Fels-Naptha bar (found in the laundry aisle)
Washing Soda (NOT BAKING SODA)
A grater
A blender
An air-tight container

This recipe makes 48 loads worth, and at 1 tablespoon a load you won’t need a huge storage container for this one.
Start by grating your Fels-Naptha bar– the whole thing.

Originally, I didn’t think to use a blender so I was grating using the finest side possible. I didn’t think about the blender until I added the other two ingredients. It just didn’t look right have shreds, so I threw the whole thing in the blender to make powder. Save yourself the hassle, just throw it in the blender now (grate it first, you don’t want to hurt your blender blades!)

Next, add 1 and 1/2 cup Borax

Add 1 and 1/2 cup Washing Soda

Stir well

If you are me, at this point you throw it in the blender.

And stir some more.

Voila! Ta-da!

UPDATE 3/5/12
It has been 2 weeks since my mom and my sister have used this detergent I made for them and while they love it on their own clothes, they both have said that it is not very effective on baby clothes. I thought I should jump on here and make that known to my readers. They have said that areas of spit up although smell clean, have left a faint grease-like stain on the clothing/cloth and they had to re-wash using store bought detergent in order to remove the spot!

This is such a great idea! Can’t wait to hit Walmart and gather my ingredients cause me and one of my girlfriends have a date to make our own laundry detergent! Thanks so much for sharing with the Pink hippo Party.. can’t wait to see what you share next!

I love this homemade laundry detergent! If you add a small container of Oxiclean or store brand Oxygen cleaner to the mix, it becomes much more effective on stained laundry. Especially if you use 2 tablespoons for heavily soiled loads. I, personally, add the Oxiclean and a small box of baking soda to the laundry detergent mix, since it only adds a few dollars to the overall price and it boosts the cleaning power for baby clothes, baseball clothes, cheer shoes, etc. It is great, as is, if you don’t have heavily stained laundry to deal with. 🙂
