Families Are Forever |Vinyl|

3 Feb

One of the simplest gifts to give are those containing vinyl! At least for me… and I love doing it! It’s a cheap alternative for wedding gifts when money is tight- and, who doesn’t love home decor? I mean really? All you need is a good piece of wood and your silhouette (not paid to say that, I am just truly obsessed with them) This particular gift is about families, as in Families Are Forever.
Here is a wood plank I made for my brother in law and his wife for Christmas.

Families Are Forever
Pin It
I took a simple Red Oak plank (a scrap that measures about 3 inches wide by 2 ft long and 1 inch thick) and finished it with Shelac. I cut the last name “Coffey” out in black vinyl and the words “families are forever” in white vinyl, layering the two on the plank. I wish I had written down or remembered what fonts I used, but I forgot to. Basically, the look I was going for was an all caps solid background wording and a formal or script font for the top writing. I purchased picture hanging hardware at Hobby Lobby and secured it to the back for easy hanging. So simple yet personable for any occasion.

I want to make one of these for my nephew and his wife who just moved into their first home. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Question: were you able to print your vinyl out all in one piece (families are forever part?) If so, how do you do that if it is longer than 12 inches? I know they make a 12 X 24 cutting mat, do I have to have one of those? I am new to using my Silhouette, so pardon my ignorance! 🙂 Any help would be appreciated.

      Hi Sandy!
I am glad to help! I loooove my silhoeutte. I don’t get paid to promote them so believe me when I say you’ve made a great purchase!!! Do you have the Cameo or the Portrait?
When you open your silhouette program, there is a menu on the right that should automatically default to “page settings”. If it doesn’t, the top of your screen will also have a menu with icons- Page Settings is the icon with a red square. All you need to do is change the “length” of your “page” to whatever size you want your wording to be (give it an extra 1/4 inch or more just for easy transfer). You don’t need the larger cutting mat, though it is helpful. I have cut vinyl on no mat before, it just takes a little extra patience and a slower cutting speed so that that rollers can grab it and not slide the vinyl as it cuts.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Mandy, that helped so much! I have a Cameo and am having so much fun learning about it.

Thank you also for checking out my blog, I really appreciate it. I will do a post about this sign once I get it finished, and I will of course refer back to your post 🙂
