Fruit Fly Catcher

6 May

There is an old wives trick about getting rid of fruit flies in your kitchen. The old theory goes, put a mug of apple cider vinegar out on the counter and they will be attracted to it and not your fruit. With summer rapidly approaching and all the delicious fruit sitting out on my counter, I decided it was time to give this theory of natural fruit fly catcher a try.

What you’ll need:
Apple Cider Vinegar
Small jar or cup
Funnel (and possibly tape if it doesn’t fit snug)
Fruit Fly Catcher

Let me first point out that- yes, that is one of my Moroccan Lanterns. I needed a small jar or cup and it was the best thing I could find at the time. Secondly, I need to make a point that I tried this without the funnel and it failed. While it did attract the flies, they all sat around the rim of the jar and would fly away when I got close. Thus, the funnel came about. I grabbed a piece of paper from my kitchen notepad to make the funnel- only it didn’t sit tight on my jar. The next closest thing in reach was medical tape (Why? I’m not even sure.) so I closed it off by taping the funnel around the jar. I walked away to move on with my day and test this theory. About thirty minutes later I returned to the kitchen for lunch preparations, only to take mental note that there were not obnoxious fruit flies. I had no idea how well my little contraption worked until I removed the tape and dumped out the apple cider vinegar and found all these floating fruit flies. It was both disgusting and strangely satisfying. Some positives to this method: No nasty smell (using a small jar, you really don’t smell vinegar at all!), no rotting fruit as an attractant, and no sticky pads. I’m giving this old wives tale 2 Mandy thumbs way up!

I am SOOO going to do this SOON! I accidentally bought too many oranges (I picked up a bag not knowing the hubby also did the day before) so we are ALREADY starting to get the nasty critters. I love your comment “It was both disgusting and strangely satisfying” LOL

thanks for the invite! I’m headed over now! Is this a weekly party? If so I’ll add it to my linky parties page!

  11. Thanks for the tip. They haven’t hit here yet this year, but I know they will soon. I’ve tried Apple Cider vinegar in a bowl before, but it didn’t work that well. I will have to try this small jar with a funnel trick. I hope it works as well for me as it did for you.

I live in Costa Rica and we battle flies year-round. My husband and I have found a way to keep ants at bay, but this is the first time I’ve seen a fly-catcher of this type. I can’t wait to try it out. The flies have really been bugging us (literally!) lately, but it’s been too hot outside to keep the windows closed. Thanks so much for the tip!
