This is a fun and trendy gift idea for under $5! Mugs with a mustache for him, the Mr., and a kiss for her, the Mrs. Darling, right? These His & Hers mugs require only 3 supplies; 2 mugs (dollar store), Oil-based Sharpie pen (about $2 at most arts & crafts stores, try to use a coupon too), and vinyl for stencil (save money by using your scraps!).
How-to use a vinyl stencil:
Using my Silhouette software, I created a mustache and a lips or “kiss” from clip art to cut. Using the font Lavanderia, I wrote “Mr.” and “Mrs.” under the each image (mustache for him, kiss for her- obviously). I cut it out in vinyl and weeded the negative- creating the stencil. Apply it to the mug with transfer tape, just as you would any other vinyl project. Press firmly, you really don’t want any bleeding when you are using vinyl as a stencil.
Using An Oil-based Sharpie:
Get the Sharpie pen started as the directions read. Once the ink is flowing, trace the mug with the stencil. The ink of the pen flows very quickly, be prepared for it to be a bit drippy. It also starts to dry quickly, so if you make any mistakes, be quick to wipe it up with a q-tip.
You will want to remove the vinyl stencil before the ink sets too long, or else the stencil night peel some of the ink off with it. Better safe than sorry, go ahead and peel the vinyl off as soon as you’re finished.
Setting the ink on the mug:
Place your mug in a cooled oven. The mug needs to heat up with the oven. Set your oven at 350°, and then set a timer for 30 minutes. When the time is up, turn off your oven but leave your mug in the oven to cool. Do not remove the mug until the oven is completely cooled down. Before removing it, be sure to carefully check if it is cooled. Please don’t burn yourself.
