How To Swaddle A Baby

When I had my first child, I swear that kid kept kicking out of her blanket. I’d re-wrap and re-wrap all day long. I even purchased the Velcro swaddles and she’d kick so hard it would undo the Velcro. At about 3 months, I finally gave up and she learned to be soothed without it. Along came baby #2. I watched in the hospital as the nurse would come in to swaddle her the first hour she was born. She handed me the bundle of joy and I had to stop her before she left the room. I said, “You have got to teach me how you did this!”. And so she did! It has come in handy with my third child as well, so I thought I’d share with you how to swaddle a baby- hospital nurse style!

Swaddle A Baby Step 1

Step 1:
Lay your baby on a receiving blanket with the top of the blanket lined up to your baby’s arm pits

Swaddle A Baby Step 2

Step 2:
Pull one corner of the blanket across your baby’s belly and tuck it under your baby’s body

Swaddle A Baby Step 3

Step 3:
Pull the other corner across your baby’s belly and tuck it under baby’s body.

Swaddle A Baby Step 4

Step 4:

Pull the bottom of the blanket up over your baby’s legs and onto baby’s belly

Swaddle A Baby Step 5

Step 5:
Tuck one corner of the blanket under baby’s body

Swaddle A Baby Step 6Step 6:
Pull remaining edge tucked under baby’s body.

This style of swaddle creates a tight but safe hold that even my strongest kicker couldn’t escape. The way the blanket folds under your baby’s weight holds it on better than Velcro sides. Have a baby with Colic? With larger blankets, I could even leave wiggle room in the feet area and still have a tight hold around the colicky baby’s belly.

Pinning this for baby #2. LO was like yours, kicky & colicky. I couldn’t keep him swaddled for the life of me!

We did it just a little bit different, but mostly the same. My husband was WAY better at it than me. He’d get those girls snug and a bug in a rug. 🙂

If you’re interested, I’d love if you shared this with my Show & Tell link party this week
