One of the most common places in your home that will get overlooked when you’re doing remodeling projects is the ceiling. We’ve had the amazing opportunity to do a product review of styrofoam ceiling tiles from ceilingtilesbyus.com. These 20×20 styrofoam ceiling tiles are incredibly light weight, durable and can be painted (and re-painted!) with any water based paint. Which means if somewhere down the road you decide you want to change things up, you can paint right over them again! Made of extruded polystyrene (high density Styrofoam), these tiles are waterproof/moisture proof. The tiles can be installed over existing ceiling finishes, including popcorn ceiling and stucco eliminating the messy, costly process of popcorn ceiling removal. Because of the high density styrofoam structure, these tiles can also aid in insulation and sound proofing. It is installed easily with liquid nails or construction adhesive and we’ve created a video to show you just how easy they go up!
We installed style R-32 from CeilingTilesByUs.com. While Ceiling Tiles By Us has many styles and options to choose from, we decided to paint ours white. This specific tile does come ready in other colors as well, we wanted white to keep a subtle elegance in our bathroom and walk-in closet.
We laid a tarp down in our garage for the painting process. If avoidable, paint somewhere away from wind/breeze because these tiles are light weight!
We laid out the tiles out and with a simple paint roller, applied a water based white paint.
The tiles are easy to cut, and we successfully did so using household scissors!
Now that we’ve prepped the tiles for installation, let’s get started (see video below).
One of the first things to consider when installing ceiling tiles, is where to start. You don’t want to start off with a main focal point being a cut or partial piece. You want the focal point to be a whole tile.
Apply the adhesive on the corners and a gallup in the center. Firmly press the tile to the ceiling, and hold for a few seconds for the adhesive to grab.
Once you have every possible whole tile installed, it’s time to measure and cut for the partial pieces. Dry fit a whole tile, and use a marker to mark where it needs to be cut. Using household scissors, follow your marking and trim the excess portion. Then apply your custom fitted ceiling tile just as the others were.
The end results are stunning.

As my 3 year old put it “Mommy! Look! It is so beautiful! Thank you mommy, this makes our house sooooo wonderful” (Not kidding. Actual quote from Jolene.)
Ceiling Tiles By Us also offers crown molding, so our next step is to purchase molding from them to finish this elegant look.
